Sundate

We woke up and headed to the gym. The husband has been working on his swimming strokes in preparation of his big event for 2016, and I went ahead with my own gym session. Usually, we clock about 60-90 minutes at the gym and these pockets of workout times mean the world to me. Not only do I feel on top of the world post the endorphins kick, I also savour the time spent with the husband.

On this lovely Sunday, we were meant to try a brunch cafe but because it was rather crowded, we ended up at My Little Spanish Place a few doors down and it turned out to be a full-blown 3-course lunch with a drink. Yum.

A recommended appetiser of seared pork well-marinated, seated
on top of some chips and tomato bits.

We shared a main of seafood paella, which was not bad but slightly salty for my liking (didn't stop me from devouring the whole pan though!). And lastly, the dessert which sounded and looked promising but sadly, didn't finish off the win for the meal.

Chocolate tart

Turns out the husband and I had been out on the weekend, doing what we do best - eating to our hearts' content - a few times the past month here and here; and truth is, we do enjoy each other's company while savouring good meals and it's been such a privilege to have this time to ourselves to do so. To hear him say that he enjoys our time together during these sessions too brings immense joy to me.

To more healthy workouts and common enjoyment of good food!

Monday's fruity fuel

Breakfast at the desk: soaked oats in coconut water with
chia seeds (they really photograph awful) topped with
 blueberries, strawberries and honeydew. Yum.

These are a few of my favourite things

The sister tagged me to fill this list of favourites for fun. It's coffee-time now on a mid-day and no better time to take some time out to do it, right here, right now.

  • Favourite coffee: Latte. in my new routine, I take coffee twice a day at work. For my morning wake-me-up, it's a green Nespresso Espresso Forte, and post-lunch, it's a brown Lungo Leggero.
  • Favourite alcoholic drink: beer. White lager preferred.
  • Favourite normal/hawker drink (cold): None. I seldom drink soda or sweetened water and I usually bring my own water.
  • Favourite hawker drink (hot): Coffee, or tea, teh-si, or teh harlia (preferably from an Indian stall)
  • Favourite tea: Green or peppermint. Not a staple though.
  • Favourite eggs: Sunny side up with runny yolk.
  • Favourite processed meat (sausages/bacon/ham): Sausages
  • Favourite brunch food: Big breakfast, egg hollandaise; usually the savoury options. If there is an option to share, then I'll opt for pancakes.
  • Favourite dessert: Anything chocolate. Or chendol.
  • Favourite ice cream flavour: Chocolate. Salted caramel.
  • Favourite pasta: I'm not very into pasta, it's too carb-heavy for me but I prefer oil-based options (aglio olio) or squid-ink when well-prepared is very tasty and I also like angel-hair pasta.

  • Generally, I'm quite an adventurous (or easy) person where food is concerned. I will eat practically anything and everything as I'm greedy like that. I used to hate raisins and pineapple but slowly, I've learnt to tolerate them. I will be mindful about consuming overly-exotic food (cannot imagine eating balut - that Filipino bird egg dish *horror) but I think maybe one day I will try fried worms (crispy like fries, right?). No pet animals (dog meat no no) and I do refrain from sharks' fin 90% of the time.

    Otherwise, I love to eat!

    Sundate brunch

On this slightly out-of-the-norm Sunday, where instead of waking up to work out I laid in; where instead of sleeping in the husband woke up - we both got dressed and went out. And the result was one that was very comfortable, surprising and pleasant, fulfilling and I felt very loved.

Chanced upon a cafe called Whisk in Tiong Bahru

And discovered this sweet pastry called bostock.

Hope you had a nice Sunday too!

    Monday night dinner

    Again! The husband cooks. Yay

OK so maybe the cheese is a bit much and makes the pic looks a bit not great
    but it tasted pretty good!
Left - bowl of salad with a ton of cheese (heh)
Right - the husband's new dish of Aglio Olio with pan-fried pork
(it was interesting. Tasted a bit like bak kwa).
And a ton of cheese. (heh heh)

    Terrific Tuesday Treats

The husband and I decided, on a whim, to head to the gym.
I clocked in a decent workout. My arms are achey today and
so are my abs (and back - bad posture!)

We headed for some simple, so-good-yet-bad bak chor mee and then... *drumroll please

    WAFFLES WITH HORLICKS-TIM-TAM & STOUT-CHOCOLATE
ICE-CREAM DRIBBLED WITH CHOCOLATE SAUCE, SUGAR
    POWDER AND ALMOND FLAKES

Can you tell that I'm terribly excited about ice-cream and waffles? I felt very happy and blissful because just a week ago, the husband and I had an unplanned date-night mid-week too. And to have him to myself (no kids!) and waffle+ice-cream - what a great start to September.

Hope we all have some kick-ass last quarter of 2015!

Some company to end the day

Not the best idea after trying to eat healthy in the day with
oats for breakfast then salad for lunch... yet on the flipside, it's pretty
awesome company when you have to tackle work #winsomelosesome

A bit of rainbow for breakfast

Beige (oats) need never be boring. Add splashes of green
(grapes and kiwi), red (strawberry) and blue (blueberries).

Fuel for the body - part two

In my new work environment, I discovered that eating out has its major disadvantages - namely, everything is pricey. The food options are healthy - salads, sandwiches, wraps; but as we know, these type of western options are usually double to the usual food-court fare. There is a food court where more conventional food options range from $4 and more but it is always extremely packed and the options are also limited.

I spent the first week eating yummy, healthy salad - and spending more than $50 in a week, across five lunches. Now, that is pretty luxurious if you ask me and while I enjoyed filling my body with healthy food, my heart and pockets were wailing.

I lamented on this to my mother and in a jiffy so quick before you can say "help me (fairy god-) mother", she bought a thermal food flask for me. I'm fortunate that my helper is a super cook, and with the tool made available for us, we did!

My first bring-from-home meal - rice, brocolli and gravy chicken + potatoes
    #redchillipadiamust

It felt so great eating freshly prepared food at work, brings me some warmth and sense of home when I'm outside. I've brought more lunches from home and it's always been hits (no misses).

Rice, codfish, beans and there was chicken under the veg! What a surprise!

Besides chinese fare, I also started buying salad base + ingredients to bring to work which are just as yummy and good on the pockets. I need to eat them within 3-4 days or the leaves start to wilt.

Spinach base, mixed leaves, cherry tomatoes, baby carrots,
cheese (sliced and grated) with some cooked salmon on top

Nuts are available in the pantry (see that on the fork?) so I usually add a
dash into my salad bowl for added crunch

I have been bringing food from home about 2-3 times a week for two weeks so far and it's been a great arrangement. Whee!

    Visiting Pasir Ris Park

A picnic where the girl got upset with ants and I was grumpy until fed.
This picnic was unplanned, and I was set on heading to catch fireworks (as that was what we discussed all day). But when the kids are happy, and the husband is amiable with making the decision and arrangements... I guess I should not complain. Once I was not hungry anymore, I felt way better. And we all had fun feeding the mosquitoes and it was nice seeing the kids get some exercise on their little bikes. I realise that it's J's first time riding on a bike in an open space on his own!

Giving their little legs some workout

Thankful for the family time and I did manage to relax by the breakwater, watching and being amazed at the heavy traffic at our Airport; plus I even got a chance to ride on the 'flying fox'!

When I hear them laugh, when I see them grinning from ear to ear, when they ask (several times) to go back to the park again, I know that's what matters, really.

    Lunch - home-made tapau style

Along with changes in my life, today marks the first of packed lunches from home. It started with me lamenting that I'm eating my wages away with the pricey food options at work, and the very sweet Mother turned up with a brand new set of Zojirushi food containers. With the gift, I found it easy to request for my helper to cook simple food that I may bring to work.

Results? A healthy, yummy, affordable lunch that made my heart and tummy full.

TADAH! Braised chicken with potatoes, boiled brocolli and rice.

    Soaked oats

So it's been on more than one occasion that I read about soaked oats. I always wondered what it was and it was raved as so easy and yummy and nutritional all at once. After a lunch date with a friend last week, who told me that she eats it, it triggered me to get into action. After all, it is not technically cooking if it's just pouring stuff into a jar - akin cereal.

I read a whole bunch of interesting recipes, but I decided on a few safe ones which I know would be tough to get wrong.

    My ingredients:
    • Origins Rolled Oats
    • Magnolia Fresh Milk
    • Strawberries/blueberries
The first time I did it, it was plain oats with milk and lots of straw & blue-berries. It tasted not to bad, but I soaked too much oats and it filled me up for so long

The second time I did it, I lessened the amount of oats and added a bit of peanut butter. It added some crunch and taste to the oats, and I also topped it up with plenty of fruits (honeydew & berries). With lesser oats, it doesn't fill me up as much so I can eat at lunch time when I wish to.

This morning was my third try.

Soaked oats in milk with a dollop of honey and fresh strawberries

I like this! It makes me feel healthy, fills me up with no guilt and the experimentation is (still) fun.
    Whee!

    Sandwiches for everyone!

The simple act of piecing their own sandwich together, layering cheese, ham & tomato between bread.  Empowers them so much & it's too cute!

    Baker Kate

I ripped this recipe off Karen Cheng, and for someone who is no kitchen whiz (*snigger. I truly exaggerate with the word "whiz"), this is really something fun and dead easy. We did a first batch sometime back and had these chocolate drops and sprinkles left over, so yesterday, I bought a bunch of bananas and let K have a go at it again.

Bananas peeled. Here, she's scooping the chocolate drops into a bowl so that I can melt them.

    Coating the bananas with chocolate

    Sprinkling. "So colourful!" she exclaimed.

Here's the happy baker (again, I use the term "baker" loosely heh) with her finished masterpiece.

The best bit has gotta be me officially allowing her to eat the choc (not that she hadn't already just been snitching bits to eat throughout the process!)

    End of the journey

Just as I poured my boobs heart out into my story on breastfeeding, the inevitable happened.

My body has semi-retired from breastfeeding.

It began innocuously enough, with Jake rejecting the boob on random occasions (as shared in my last entry). Though as per Murphy's Law, the days following this entry, he took to them just fine. (Must be a man thing *rolls eyes)

Life, in general has been rather hectic and with that, came irregular expressing of milk, which resulting in irregular production which leads to supply being affected. All of which I was well aware of.

But. The straw that broke the camel's back, was when I was hit by gastric flu. Oh, it was horrid. My temperature fluctuated and hit a high of 38.6 (I was so feverish I was barely conscious of the husband talking to me, taking over the running of the household and heh - he even placed a fever patch on my forehead, the sweetheart) - I was thirsty, hungry, suffered from a body wrecked by pain and loose bowel movement. Un-fun, to say the least. I even encountered a bout of drug allergy when I took a dose of medicine not intended for me (anything to keep the virus away!) and that resulted in body itch and rash which was a first for me.

Needless to say, the past few days have taken quite a toll on my body and truly, my boobs have surrendered to say, enough is enough.

It's now time to educate weaning to my dear son, who still doesn't have an inkling and still craves for me to latch him on (hah! now the tables are turned you little boy!) and though I'm sad that the journey is at an end, I'm still proud that I've done well in my motherly duties.

11 months, my dear boy. 11 months. Mommy's tried her best and I know that you and I have both had a good run together.

Now, to pack up all the apparatus and aunty bags which I needed to stuff all my mommy things in...

    Breastfeeding

I have been wanting to document this for a while, but never got around to it. I wanted to write about this topic that is very dear to my heart, and very special to me (as to most Mothers).

Before I ever had the privilege to breastfeed, I heard of many different stories – successful stories and not-so-successful ones. I peeped at colleagues who headed to the nursing rooms to do the deed and marvelled at what they're doing and wondered how exactly it was done. I heard from friends of how it hurts like hell and how a lot of perseverence is absolutely necessary in order to do it well.

When my turn came, it wasn’t smooth-sailing at the beginning. I mean, in hindsight, it was absolutely fine! But when I was in the midst of it all, being an overly hormonal first-time-over-anxious mother, all I could think of were the areas that I wasn’t doing well in, the shortcomings (some imaginary) rather than how well I was doing (to begin with, the fact that I was lactating!).

At every point in time, when I faced new situations (namely, when I first delivered, when I started expressing milk, when I headed back to work and had to learn/deal with expressing on-the-go...); oh, the stress I put myself through was unbelievable! Only after 6 months into this “job”, did I start to gain confidence that I was doing ok, that Kate wasn’t starving, that my milk was sufficient... only then, did I begin to stop worrying.

I recall 3 months into my breastfeeding journey, the husband and I went on a couple trip. This meant that I had to express milk around the clock to ensure that my supply didn’t drop. This posed challenges because I was inexperienced and I panicked everytime we strayed too far from our hotel. My stress and insecurity overwhelmed me so, to the point that I had a fight with the husband while on this trip; I still remember it vividly because the fight took place on his birthday. Boo.

I breastfed Kate for a year. For a whole year, she consumed only BM; and at the end of it, I was terribly proud and pleased with myself. I had done well.

Second time round, I was a lot, a lot more relaxed. The fact that I had done it before played a huge part; but this relaxed mood was applicable not only to breastfeeding – generally, I was a lot less anxious, and a lot more fun to be around (heh – yes, I know I can be a pain when I’m like that). Four months into breastfeeding Jake, I had to introduce formula to him because I could not keep up with his demands. Being a boy, his appetite was double than that of Kate’s and I was truly unable to keep up. I wanted to give up then, because it was easy to just stop; but I preservered on. I fed as much BM as I could provide, topping up the remaining feed with formula. I think this worked out to be one feed per day; then progressively more or less, depending on supply of BM.

In a blink of an eye, Jake turns 11 months in 2 days time. My target was to continue feeding him for a year, so that I’m fair to him as I did with Kate. But lately, he’s begun to reject me on occasions – perhaps my milk flow doesn’t suit his fancy or maybe he just doesn’t prefer the boob anymore. Whatever it is, I think I’m ready to stop; not too long to go now before I retire from breastfeeding.

I know that I will miss it, because it is truly the one thing that only I can do. I’ll miss the bonding with my child, the pride whenever my child burps with contentment after a feed. Breastfeeding is a miraculous and beautiful experience and I’m very thankful that I was able to do it not once, but twice with both my children.

    Jake's new diet

Tonight, my little man tasted formula milk for the first time.

    I have mixed feelings.

I know I shouldn't compare, but I supplied enough to feed Kate total breast milk for a whole year. And I truly take pride in being a good mother, to be able to provide for my baby, in giving him the best I can. So I'm mildly shattered that I'm unable to keep up the same for Jake.

I was ill two weeks back and while I managed to maintain my supply through the sick week, my supply suddenly dropped while I was on the mend. I think being tired from lack of sleep and work becoming more hectic plays a part too. So while I was comfortably providing for Jake (slight surplus) before, I am now just providing enough. I know that even if I maintained my best efforts to express milk, it will soon not be enough because Jake's consumption will increase and there will come a point that he may not have enough to drink. I don't want to starve him, so tonight, I headed to purchase an infant tin of formula milk powder. And it was with mixed feelings that I bottle-fed him some formula milk.

I'll give him a feed of formula milk once every night to slowly introduce it to his body, to monitor and ensure that he doesn't have any adverse reactions to it (constipation).

I know I cannot take this too personally, but I cannot help but be a little emo. Sigh. Maybe it's a good thing anyway. I can let go being a cow more easily since it's not as if I had any choice, anyway.

Coincidentally, I read this article today. It's not every day that I have the time and luxury to flip the papers, so I guess it's a sign. I like to think that way cos it makes me feel a little better.

    Dear Jake,

You're growing up so quick! Mommy has tried her best but I'm unable to keep up with your growth, so I hope you enjoy the new milk. You're a little ill now and I really hope that you recover soon. And you're definitely teething soon because you're gnawing especially on the left side of your mouth.
    Love, Mommy

    Hungry?

Kate was really cranky last night and insisted on wanting to eat some egg rolls. I promised her that I'll feed her some, after she had her dinner proper. So when she finished her dinner, I took out a roll and let her have fun with it. It crumbled, so I handed her a plate so that it'd be slightly less messy. It was soo cute seeing her pick up the crumbs with her tiny fingers, savouring every bit of the snack. I totally cracked up when she picked up the plate and put it to her mouth! HAHAHA

I love how Kate loves food with gusto. This, she definitely inherited from me. I need to say loud and clearly though, that we do not starve nor under-feed her!

    Bottoms up

For some warped reason yesterday night, Kate decided she was thirsty. Very thirsty.

I was having dinner with the husband and I handed her waterbottle to her. We had a visitor at home, so she was entertaining (herself and everyone else) walking around with the bottle, saying "Cheers" and drinking. After a while, I saw her shaking the bottle and I didn't want her to spill water all over the house, so I took it from her.

To my shock/horror/amazement, she'd finished the entire bottle of water.

That's a lot of water ok! Her tummy was like a little taut ball and we were terribly worried that she'd have a tummyache.

    Silly Kate.
